In order to produce new keys, most locksmiths use what is called a code machine on a puncher. Each key has a set of ridges specially designed to fit the heights of the pins in your lock. Each of these ridges is at different altitudes; for each different ridge height, a locksmith code machine has a different code number. So, as soon as a locksmith finds out each key’s “code,” they can simply set the computer to the correct code and start punching. It produces one of the distinctive notches in the key every time the machine is punched down.
Locksmiths use other cutting methods to produce new keys, but the code machines act as a basic tool that practically every locksmith knows how to use.
